  PRIVATE USER GUIDE

Note: we define private users as individuals who post appeals on their own behalf or on behalf of their family.

Just think of the Missing list as the first place to look for, or post an appeal for, or contribute information about, anyone or anything that is missing; and a means whereby you can be best prepared should the worst eventuality occur.

The Missing List facilitates five activities for the private user

  Searching appeals
  Responding to appeals
  Posting appeals for missing property
  Posting a found item
  Storing ownership information

Searching the database

Navigate via the menu in the left sidebar to one of the categories. There you will find an options page; choose SEARCH.

Search results are presented in the form of abbreviated entries. Full information is available by clicking ‘details’ tab. You can also make contact with the person who left the posting at this stage.

Posting appeals, posting found items

To add to or database you will need to register. To register you will should be over 18 or supervised by a parent or guardian. Registration is for your safety and to deter malicious and/or erroneous  postings and under aged users.

You will receive and email to which you will need to respond to to validate your account. Please note that this is an automated feature. If you have a spam filtering service enabled on your email account, you must pre-authorise emails from the Missing List as we will be unable to respond to authorisation requests from such services. Refer to your spam filtering service provider for information on how to do this. If it has not arrived within an hour, please check your junk folder in case it has been incorrectly classified as junk mail.

Registered users have access to a personal Control Centre where they can edit their posting, view responses to their appeal and contact respondents. You can also stipulate other forms of contact such as personal telephone numbers or e-mail or if the police are involved refer responses to the officer dealing. If the posting relates to a reported crime a crime reference number is mandatory.

Your listing will be quarantined for up to 12 hours after which it will be added to the Missing Link database.

Storing ownership information

The best way to understand the benefit of this facility is to think ‘worst case scenario’. Your house burns down and the flames consume not only the contents but also all the documents that prove ownership and value. Record detailed descriptions of your property and store duplicates of your important documents on the Missing List and you’ll always have reference to them, organised and ready for use. (Charged at one donation token per item.)

Responding to Appeals and Claiming rewards

If you have information relating to a specific appeal click REPORT leave a message in the INBOX of the person who posted the appeal or make contact via other means stipulated in the posting.

To minimise frivolous and malicious abuses, respondents wishing two way communication, for instance, claiming a reward are required to register with prior to making contact. The user Control Centre presents registered and unregistered respondents in separate planes. Users exercise their own judgement as to the veracity they ascribe to information they receive from unregistered users.

The Missing List is offered as a facility to users and has no control over the content of responses. If you suspect abuse please contact ABUSE >>
