Stolen Sheep, Cows & Livestock on The Missing List

Mention rustling and most people will picture the Wild West. But, far from being a crime of another era and another continent, rustling is the crime that has the most financial impact on farmers today.

The major problem is that a farmer’s critical investment in livestock, being spread over large, often unpopulated, areas is difficult to adequately protect. Farms closer to urban areas and motorway networks are most at risk. Farmers, particularly in the south of England, are the victims of a massive crime wave. And recent research indicates that less than half of the incidents of farm crime are reported to the police.

Livestock theft is driven by black market demand. Unscrupulous restaurant owners in the large cities are most under suspicion. And one of the major attractions of livestock theft is that after the animal is butchered it becomes virtually untraceable.
