Stolen Instruments on The Missing List

In the UK more than 1.2 million musical instruments worth over £98 million are sold each year. Of these it is estimated that over half will be lost or stolen within the first five years of purchase. And these statistics don’t take into account all those precious instruments that can be decades, even centuries old and which, by dint of age and pedigree, represent an even bigger financial incentive to thieves.

A prized musical instrument is not just a commercial asset or a tool-of-the-trade, but an integral facet of the owners’ musical expression, the loss of which can be devastating. Most musicians don’t want replacements they want their own instruments back. It's not as though a stolen Stradivarius will be melted down or stripped for parts. It stands to reason, therefore, that thousands of musicians are playing instruments unaware of their dubious provenance.

Unfortunately relatively few lost or stolen instruments are ever recovered. The Missing List is where you can take action to tip the odds in favour of recovery; start by posting an appeal and consider offering a reasonable reward.
