Police in the Rhondda are investigating the theft of 40 chickens from an allotment.

The chickens were stolen when their coop at the allotments in Upper Terrace, Ferndale, was broken into sometime overnight between Sunday and Monday.

Sergeant Cathy Wide, from the Rhondda Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:

"The break-in was reported to us on Tuesday afternoon and it is believed to have taken place sometime between 7pm on Sunday and 8am on Monday.

"This is not the first time chickens have been stolen from the allotments and it is obviously distressing for the owners.

"It must be very difficult to steal 40 chickens, and store them somewhere, without anybody noticing or hearing something,

"Officers have been out making enquiries to trace the chickens and find out who is responsible.

"There is no doubt there are people in the community who are aware of this incident and I would urge anyone with information to contact South Wales Police so the chickens can be returned to their coop."
