Police are increasing patrols in rural areas around Penrith after receiving increased reports of sheep going missing from the East Fell Side area.

Officers will also conduct sporadic stop checks of suspicious vehicles in the area in a bid to deter potential criminals.

PC Alison Taylor said:

"The area where these sheep have been stolen is isolated, fenced fell land which covers hundreds of acres, making them an easier target for thieves.

"Most local farmers have already signed up to our FarmWatch scheme, which alerts them to suspicious activity and provides crime prevention advice, and we are now urging other people working and living in the area, and anyone passing through, to call police immediately if they spot anything suspicous.

"By working together and looking out for one another in the community we can send the message to criminals that they are not welcome, and we are on the look out for them."

If you have any information about sheep theft in the East Fell Side area contact PC Alison Taylor on 0845 33 00 247.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
