Police are appealing for witnesses following a theft of garden ornaments from a back yard at a house in Binsby Gardens, Beacon Lough, Gateshead.

It is believed the theft happened between 10.30pm on Saturday, June 5 and 8.30am on Monday June 7 when ornaments of silent movie stars, Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy were taken from the fenced rear yard.

The figures are each worth approximately £100 and made of resin.

The Charlie Chaplin figure is about four feet in height and includes him leaning against a lamp post, with the globe part of the lamp missing.

The Laurel and Hardy figures are painted black and white and are sitting on a small wooden bench, which has only three legs.

The pair's bowler hats have paint missing from their rims.

Gateshead PC Caroline Jones said:

"These are distinctive garden ornaments and of personal value to their owners.

"We are appealing for anyone with information or who may be offered the figures for sale to contact us.

"Someone will know where these ornaments are and who was responsible."
