Two cats have died following a shed fire in Ely last night (Thursday April 22).
The incident happened between 6.30pm and 10.30pm at a property in Broad Street, when the shed, which the two cats were in, was set alight.
Friends discovered the fire just after 10.30pm and called the fire service.
Both cats died during the fire and around £2500 worth of damage was caused.
The fire is being treated as arson.
Insp Sean MacLoughlin said:
"This is a mindless act of vandalism which has resulted in the tragic loss of two pets.
"This incident has been extremely distressing for those involved and it is vital we trace those responsible.
"I would urge anyone with information about this fire to contact us."
