Police in Somerset are appealing for information after two ponies at the Exmoor Pony Centre in Dulverton were shot over the Christmas period.
At some time during the evening on Boxing Day it's believed that an unknown offender has shot the two Exmoor ponies, causing them serious injuries.
The animals were discovered the following day and were taken to the centre for treatment.
Unfortunately one of the ponies had to be put down as a result of its injuries, the second is still recovering.
Exmoor ponies are a British rare breed and the centre in Dulverton - a registered charity - rescues unwanted Exmoor ponies to tame and sell on to good homes.
Sergeant Andy Whysall, who is the officer dealing with this case, said:
"This is a particularly cruel crime, which is especially sad as these animals have been harmed while being cared for at a rescue centre.
"I would urge anyone with information to get in touch - either to me directly or via the rescue centre in Dulverton."
Anyone with information about this or who may have witnessed the attack should contact Police in Dulverton on 0845 456 7000.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
