The man went into a jewellers and pawnbrokers in St Peter's Street, Canterbury, at about 4.40pm on 5 December 2011 and asked to buy the watch.
Investigating officer PC Andy Palmer said:
'He agreed with staff that his girlfriend could pay for the watch by card over the phone, which she did.
'But it later transpired the card may have been stolen and the transaction was unauthorised by the bank in question.'
The suspect is described as:
The Rolex was a Sea-Dweller automatic model with a black dial.
PC Palmer added:
'We would like to speak to this man or anyone who recognises his picture.
'We would also like to hear from anyone who has recently been offered a Rolex watch matching this description for sale.'
