Police are appealing for information following an incident with a pellet gun in Newport, which has left a 12-year-old boy in danger of losing the sight of one eye.

Police were called at 4.20pm yesterday (Sunday January 15th) and notified that the boy had been injured with a pellet from an air gun in an incident that occurred in an area behind Livale Road, Bettws.

The boy, who lives locally, was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital and has since had surgery.

Police have been carrying out house to house enquiries in the area.

Local officers are carrying out patrols and are available to speak to any residents who may have any information or any concerns.

They are working closely with Gwent Police serious violent crime team as well as forensic officers to progress the investigation.

Superintendent Dave Johnson said:

"These incidents thankfully are rare.

"While it is not necessary to have a license for air weapons, these kinds of incidents highlight how dangerous they can be if used irresponsibly.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the young lad who was injured and we are urging the community to contact us with any information that can help us find the person responsible"

Anyone with information is asked to call Gwent Police on 101.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
