British Transport Police (BTP) is appealing for the public's help after an altercation took place between two men at East Boldon Metro station.
Officers are releasing CCTV images of a man they would like to identify in connection with the incident which took place on Monday, 31 October.
PC Dave Burns, of BTP's dedicated Sunderland Metro Unit, said:
"Two men left a Metro as it pulled into East Boldon station at around 2.50pm.
"After words were exchanged on the train, and a verbal altercation began between the two on the southbound platform."
A 25-year-old from Wallsend was later arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and was bailed pending further enquiries.
He has since failed to return from police bail and is also currently sought by police.
Officers are continuing their investigating, conducting many lines of enquiry and are appealing for anyone who recognises the man, who police believe will have key information, to come forward.
PC Burns added:
"Violent and threatening behaviour will not be tolerated on the rail network and we will do all we can to bring those who continue to disrupt law-abiding passenger's journeys to justice."
Anyone who recognises the man is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.
