A would-be arsonist attempted to start a fire at the back of a flat in Baguley.
At 10.20pm on Wednesday 24 March 2010, a 28-year-old man was at his home on Oakcliffe Road when he heard a loud bang.
He saw flames at the back door but the fire did not ignite fully.
Afterwards a broken bottle believed to contain petrol was found outside the ground floor window.
Nobody was injured in the incident and no damage was caused to the building.
Detective Constable Dominic Heslop, based at South Manchester CID, said:
"This was thoroughly mindless and put the lives of everybody in that building, including those of three children who were in the flat, in danger.
"We are determined to catch the person responsible - if you know who did this or saw something that might help us track them down, please contact me."
Anyone with information is asked to call South Manchester CID on 0161 856 6154.
