On Monday 1st June 2009 Cumbria Police received information passed by the RSPB regarding a pigeon which had been tethered to a brick to prevent it flying in Salterhall Quarry, near Rowrah, Frizington.

Police attended and recovered from the quarry a dead pigeon which is suspected to have been laced with poison.

It is believed that the pigeon has been left at the location in an effort to attract and poison peregrine falcons.

The quarry has previously been used for similar illegal activity in April this year and in previous years.

Police are continuing their enquiries with the assistance of Natural England through the wildlife incident investigation scheme and the RSPB.

Pesticide abuse is used to target birds of prey but can also be indiscriminate with pets also likely to suffer if they come in contact with the bait.

There are also serious health risks to humans who may come into contact with it.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to Cumbria police on 08453 300247.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
