Bogus bailiff steals cash and cards from elderly lady, CCTV issued: Leicester

Police have released the image of a man they wish to talk to following a distraction burglary in the Winchester Avenue area of Leicester.

The incident happened at approximately 2pm on Tuesday September 6, when the victim, a woman in her eighties, was approached by a man at her home who claimed to be a bailiff collecting money.

The victim handed the man some cash, took some money from her bank account and then gave the man her bank card and pin number after being told she may qualify to have the money returned to her account.

More cash was then taken from her account before the card was cancelled.

The suspect had been the victim's house a number of weeks before asking for money, this incident was not reported to police at the time.

The suspect is described as:

  • a white male
  • aged 30 to 40
  • stocky build
  • 5'10" and 6ft tall
  • dark hair
  • wearing a dark coloured jacket and suit
  • carrying a black leather brief case

PC Steve Kilsby, the investigating officer, said:

"This is a very sad case where a woman has trustingly handed over her own money.

"It's hard to believe that someone would deceitfully take money from a vulnerable person out of their money once, let alone twice.

"I would like to appeal for anyone with information about the incident to call us as soon as they can.

"It's important that we get as much information as we possibly can so please don't hesitate to call us.

"We are also keen to speak to the person in the image.

"If you are that person or know who they are then please call us as soon as you can."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 1724 Steve Kilsby by dialing 101.

Follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer, and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 1724.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
