If you go down to the woods today.... You might be in for a big surprise....
A secret nuclear bunker set in Kelvedon Hatch woodland is now one of the new training grounds for Essex Police dogs and their handlers.
Police community support officer (PCSO) Moira Kennedy, who regularly patrols the area, contacted nuclear bunker land owner Mike Parrish suggesting the area would make an excellent place to train police dogs.
Mr Parrish immediately opened his doors to allow the police officers and their dogs to train on his land at any time of day or night.
The nuclear bunker was built in 1952 to house some of central government in the event of a nuclear war. In 1994 it was opened to the public on a daily basis.
Dog handler Pc Amanda Pollard, who regularly visits with police dog Quincy said:
"It's a fantastic area to take the dogs with huge scope allowing for various training scenarios.
"I would like to thank Mr Parrish for allowing us the opportunity to train here."
Land owner Mick Parrish said:
"I am delighted to have the Essex Police officers and their dogs train here."
