Firemen subjected to abuse in unauthorised bonfire incident: Methil

Fife policehave issued a warning following an incident in Maple Gardens in Methil on Sunday night (8th Nov) which saw Fife Fire and Rescue staff subjected to stone throwing when officers attended in response to an unauthorised fire.

A fire appliance was called to the area shortly after 9pm and were confronted by a group of about 20 youths who began to throw bottles and stones at the crew, striking at least 5 of them but fortunately no injuries were reported.

Commenting on the incident a spokesman for the fire service, Group Manager Alex Smart, said

‘Whilst attending an incident to extinguish a bonfire, firefighters were subjected to physical and verbal abuse.

'They were under attack from a large number of youths throwing stones, which resulted in 5 crew members being struck by stones, however no injuries were reported.

'Fife Police were requested to attend the incident and the bonfire was extinguished safely'.

He went on to say

'This is not the first incident in this area and these despicable attacks occur despite our efforts to engage with the community.

'It is unacceptable that firefighters in working to protect members of the public are subjected to abuse'.

Levenmouth Chief Inspector Mike Stevens said:

"Assaulting members of a fire crew who are doing their job of ensuring a safe environment for us all is nothing short of disgraceful.

"There were about 20 youths at one point and their ages ranged from 10 years of age to about 14 years.

"I ask this question of all parents in the area - do you know what your children were doing on Sunday night?

"Some parents may well get a very accurate idea with what their kids have been up to as they will be present when my officers charge those children involved.

"The law recognises the serious nature of fire fighters being obstructed and assaulted on the streets when only doing their job and we will use this legislation in this case."
