Gardai have arrested a man in his late 20's and seized heroin believed to be valued 1.6 million Euro in a planned operation near Carrick On Shannon, Co. Leitrim on the 18th of December 2008.
At 8.30pm on the 18th of December a car was stopped by Gardai at Cortober, Carrick On Shannon.
A search of the car revealed what is believed to be 8 kilos of heroin which, subject to analysis may have a street value of up to 1.6 million euro.
The driver of the car, a 28 year old man was arrested, with an address in Dublin and is detained under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act at Carrick On Shannon Garda Station where he may be detained for up to seven days.
A full forensic technical examination of the drugs and the car will now take place.
The planned operation was carried out by Gardai from Sligo/Leitrim Division supported by Gardai from the Garda National Drugs Unit and the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
