Four City office cleaners have been deported following a tip-off to police by security from the building where they worked.

Last week, in a joint operation, City of London Police officers and investigators from the UK Border Agency caught company staff unawares when they entered their workplace on Fenchurch Street.

After checking personal records five Brazilians and two Nigerians were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

Subsequent investigations, involving the Immigration Department, led to four people being deported and three being released.

Insp Frank Thornborrow, from 'Safer City Wards', said:

"This is a good example of how the City of London Police is working effectively with business partners and the UK Border Agency to identify City workers who are illegally staying in this country.

"It is also part of a wider problem and we strongly believe many firms are employing people who have also entered the UK illegally."

If you have any concerns regarding the people employed to clean your building please contact the City of London Police on 0207 601 2442 or via email at: community@cityoflondon.police.uk .

All calls will be treated in confidence.
