Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman tried to grab a buggy containing a child on Montgomery Street, in Edinburgh, on Tuesday afternoon (August 23).

The 30-year-old mother had stopped the buggy with her five-month-old baby girl inside near the junction with Windsor Street around 4.30pm when another woman took hold of the buggy handles and tried to push it away.

The brakes of the buggy were on, meaning the woman was not able to move it, and the child's mother grabbed it back quickly.

The woman was then seen running north in Montgomery Street towards Easter Road where she met another woman.

The suspect is described as:

  • a white female
  • aged 18-20
  • slight build
  • pale complexion
  • yellowing teeth
  • bright piercing blue eyes
  • shoulder-length black/dark hair
  • spoke with a local accent
  • wearing no make up, a white hooded top with navy or royal blue leggings

A police spokesman said:

"Fortunately the child was not injured in this incident, although it has left her mother understandably shaken.

"They had stopped on Montgomery Street to say goodbye to some relatives, and as such we have a good description available of the woman who grabbed the buggy.

"We are very concerned about her behaviour, and there is a suggestion from witnesses that the women may have mental health problems, therefore we are keen to try and identify her."
