Police investigating burglary discover cannabis factory: Laygate, South Shields

A cannabis farm has been discovered following reports of a burglary in South Tyneside.

At just before 10.50pm, on Thursday, September 15, police received a report of a possible burglary at a property on Laygate, South Shields.

Officers attended the scene where three men, two aged 36 and one aged 26, were detained and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

They have been bailed pending further enquiries.

During a search of the property, officers discovered a cannabis farm inside with in excess of 600 plants.

These have now been seized and destroyed.

Enquiries are currently underway in relation to the discovery.

Neighbourhood Inspector Peter Sutton said:

"Police action at this property has prevented a large amount of cannabis reaching the streets of South Tyneside and disrupted the criminal activity of the people behind it.

"Enquiries are ongoing to trace those involved.

"We have also arrested three people on suspicion of burglary thanks to the original call from a member of the public.

"I would urge people to continue to supply us with information on any suspicious activity so that we can act on it and take action where appropriate."

People can contact police on 03456 043 043.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
