Police warn of bogus officials after £2,000 jewellery theft: Harrogate

Harrogate police are asking for residents who have been cold called by water officials in the past few weeks to contact them.

The move follows an incident in Harrogate when bogus water officials targeted an elderly woman in the Jennyfields area.

Last week, two men called at the woman's home, claiming to be water officials.

They conned their way inside and as one kept her talking downstairs, the other went upstairs and stole several items of jewellery worth over £2,000.

The woman was unaware of the burglary until a few days afterwards.

Police are asking residents in the Harrogate area to contact them if they think they may have been targeted by bogus officials.

Detective Sergeant Paul Schofield said:

"We would like to hear from anyone who thinks they may have been targeted by cold callers in the past few weeks.

"The burglars often pick on elderly and vulnerable people who sometimes find it difficult to say no to strangers who call at their door because they believe it is not polite to keep someone waiting on the doorstep.

"Genuine callers will always carry identification and are happy to present it when asked.

"They will not mind waiting on the doorstep if residents wish to contact the company they represent and confirm their credentials."

• Stop - before you open the door
• Chain - put it on
• Check - ask the caller for their identification, and check it, before letting them in
• Use the phone number in the phone book, not on an identity card

DS Schofield added:

"We'd also like to encourage anyone with elderly parents, relatives or neighbours to speak with them to reinforce the message not to allow cold-callers into their homes.

"Reassure them that keeping someone waiting at the door is not impolite and if they have any doubt whatsoever about who they are, do not let them in."
