On November 9 the pony, a brown and white six year old Shetland called Trigger, was reported stolen from the allotment area to the back of the Frog and Ferret pub in Spennymoor.
The owner was out looking for it yesterday when she came across its severed head on a track about a ten minute walk away from where it was stolen.
No other parts of the pony have been found at this time.
Police are investigating and the RSPCA has been informed.
PC Paul Colman from the Spennymoor beat team said:
"We are carrying out extensive enquiries to find the person responsible for this.
"The owner is naturally extremely distressed, and we would welcome contact from anyone who may have information about the incident."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham Constabulary on 0345 60 60 365 and ask for the Spennymoor beat team.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
