Detectives investigating an incident of rape in Warlingham are keen to trace anyone who may have been in the Hillbury Road area in the early hours of this morning (Friday, 4 September).
The offence took place in the recreation ground, near Maple Road, sometime between 12.30am and 1.30am, as the 19-year-old victim was walking home following a night out with friends.
The suspect is described as:
- a white male
- around 5ft 11in tall
- local accent
Detective Inspector Jackie Elkins said:
"This young lady was walking back to her friend's house following an evening out in Croydon.
"The group of girls had become separated and, although the victim is familiar with the area, she was walking around the park trying to find her friends when the suspect approached her from behind and raped her.
"I am urgently appealing for anyone who was in the Hillbury Road or Godstone Road areas in the early hours of this morning to come forward.
"Do you recall seeing a man matching the suspect's description in that area at around 1am today?
"We urgently need to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of the recreation ground around 12.30am this morning.
"Offences of this nature are very rare and are taken extremely seriously by Surrey Police.
The recreation ground was sealed off and thoroughly searched by scenes of crime officers and we will be carrying out house-to-house enquiries this evening.
"If anyone has any information which could help with our enquiries, then please get in touch."
This incident is not being linked to a rape in Walton on the Hill on Wednesday, 29 July.
