Police to crack down on prostitution and drug use: Lakenham / Tuckswood

Date of Incident: 23/09/2009

Posted on: September 24th, 2009 by 2049

Operations to target prostitution will continue in the Lakenham and Tuckswood neighbourhood.

Residents raised concerns about street workers at the latest priority setting meeting and have asked police to continue to carry out their successful operations to help deal proactively and effectively with girls on the streets.

In recent weeks the operations have led to several arrests as well as referring street workers to support groups to help them rehabilitate them away from this trade.

Along with prostitution the team has pledged to take action against drug use and supply within the area.

Insp Ross McDermott said:

"We listened to the concerns residents had at the priority setting meeting and as a result the panel set two priorities which we aim to address.

"We would encourage residents to get in touch with us or complete one of our new surveys to raise their neighbourhood issues.

"Knowing the publics concerns enables us to direct policing resources where they are needed".

As of 1 October the team will carry out a new process to feed concerns into the main priority setting meeting.

PCSO's will carry out a simple survey within their particular microbeat area, in Lakenham and Tuckswood there are eight micro beats, to find out the issues affecting residents, capturing more concerns and meeting more residents than ever before.

Residents will then be invited to attend a street briefing on their doorstep to further discuss the issues and decide which one of the issues is put forward to the panel.

The panel will then select three priorities from the eight issues put forward which will be announced at a public meeting.

The next general Lakenham and Tuckswood Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel (SNAP) meeting, where the new priorities will be announced is being held on Wednesday 9 December at the Jubilee Centre at 7pm.

PCSO's will start surveying residents and holding their surgeries/meetings which will be advertised within the neighbourhood and during the course of their surveys.
