Police were alerted just before 16:30hrs on Friday, 3 July to reports of a fire at Lakanal Flats off Dalwood Street in Camberwell, SE5.

Six people are known to have died in the fire:

A child believed aged 3-weeks-old, a 7-year-old child and woman were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

A further three people were pronounced dead at the scene, a child aged approximately six years old, a woman in her 30's and an adult.

Police believe they know the identity of those that died but await to inform all next of kin and for formal identification.

Post mortems are being arranged.

London Fire Brigade rescued 30 people from the blaze, which began on the fourth floor and rapidly spread to the eleventh. Of those 30 people, three died at hospital and 12 remain in hospitals across London where they are being treated for their injuries.

Officers have assisted with the evacuation of surrounding premises with residents being taken to a nearby church hall where they are being assisted by Southwark Council.

Once the LFB declare the building as safe as it can be the Southwark Council will undertake a survey to assess the condition of the building. But several floors have been severely fire damaged and it is unlikely residents will be able to return in the near future.

It is too early to say what led to the fire and police officers are working with the LFB Investigation Team to establish the cause of the fire.

Emergency services remain at the scene. Cordons and road closures are in place.
