Stolen racecourse hurdles discovered burned: Stratford

On Tuesday morning (June 16 2009), five wooden hurdles were reported missing from the racecourse.

The hurdles were found shortly afterwards burnt on the Greenway.

Police at Stratford are appealing for anyone who witnessed the hurdles being stolen or being burnt to contact them, including several young people who camped near to the racecourse on Monday night.

The group were camping near to Stannels Bridge on the Greenway.

Inspector Patrick Devereux from Stratford Police said;

"Each hurdle was wooden framed, six feet high, five feet wide and was filled with birch wood.

"It wouldn't have been easy or quick to remove them so someone may have witnessed the theft.

"Some of the plastic padding on the top and sides was removed at the racecourse before the hurdles were moved.

"The cost of the theft was approximately £1000.

"I would urge anyone who camped overnight on the Greenway on Monday to come forward so they can be eliminated from our enquiries.

"We already have several lines of enquiry and expect arrests will follow."

Anyone who camped on the Greenway or who has information to help with police enquiries, should contact the officer in the case PC Katie Greenhalgh at Stratford Police Station on 01789 414111.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
