Detective Constable Andy Greaves, who is investigating the incident, said:
"These men have brazenly carried out this burglary in broad daylight in a busy residential street, viciously attacking the victim before making off with cash and other personal items.
"Although we do not believe this was a random attack and that the victim may have been specifically targeted, we cannot condone this level of violence on the streets of our local communities.
"I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, who recognises the descriptions of these three men or with any other information, to come forward straightaway."
