Vandals threatening the future of a popular evening bus service are being hunted in a zero-tolerance joint campaign by police, a council and the bus company.
Police have appealed for help from the public to catch and prosecute youths who have smashed windows of six buses on a route that passes through housing estates in South Ockendon and Aveley.
Thurrock Council has warned that if the youths are found to live in council housing their parents could be evicted as a result of their sons' anti-social behaviour. And the Ensignbus company plans to take legal action against the culprits to claim compensation for the costs of repairs to buses.
The bus firm has considered suspending the number 73 service from Foyle Drive, Erriff Drive and Daiglen Drive all in South Ockendon and from the Kennington estate, Aveley, after youths threw bricks and a tree branch through bus windows or taunted drivers by turning off their vehicle?s emergency engine cut-off switch
