    Shortly before 10am this morning, 25.7.09, a recently retired Garda, Peter O'Donnell,  who was in Carrick on Shannon Garda Station in relation to his former role tragically died.

    The incident involved an official firearm. No other Garda member was involved in the incident.

    The retired Garda was pronounced dead at the scene.

    About 1214 hours, Thursday 23 July 2009, a full emergency was declared at Wick Airport after a RAF Tucano trainer aircraft with two pilots on board requested to land at Wick due to a suspected engine malfunction.

    The RAF Tucano aircraft was from RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

    Police have received reports of a fishing boat which has overturned about a mile and a half north of Ardnamurchan, leaving three people dead and one in hospital.

    The incident was reported to the coastguard around 5pm this evening and a search involving the RNLI, coastguard and the navy was initiated for the four people believed to have been on board.

    Six people are known to have died in the fire:

    A child believed aged 3-weeks-old, a 7-year-old child and woman were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
