Reminder to be vigilant after bank scam

Police are reminding people to be vigilant after a Stourport man received a suspicious call from two people claiming to be from his bank.

The man received calls from a man on 7th February and a woman on 9th February, who had details of his bank account and asked him for the last three digits from the back of his bank card.

They said he owed almost £500 in bank charges.

The man did not confirm his bank account details or give the digits from the back of his card.

Warning over bogus alarm system company: Essex (southern)

Police in Colchester and Tendring are warning people to be vigilant after it emerged a company selling bogus security equipment has been cold-calling residents in southern Essex.

Elderly and vulnerable people are being targeted in particular by the company, which sells fire detection and intruder alarm systems.

Young people in Stourport are being invited to "drop in and chill out" at a new Friday night facility launched in the town.

The Drop-In Centre held its first session last Friday (January 16) at the county council youth centre in Windemere Way when a number of youngsters turned up to use the facilities which include pool, table tennis, computer games, television and music system.

It has been launched for 13 to 17-year-olds by Youth Outreach Stourport (YORS), supported by the town's Local Policing Team.

Bogus alarm company targets residents in Gateshead

Police are warning residents in Gateshead to think twice before signing up for "free" burglar alarms.

Officers have recently been contacted by two elderly residents who had been approached by individuals claiming to be from a burglar alarm company and offering a free alarm worth several thousand Pounds, even claiming that the give away was government funded and police approved - which was not the case.

New scheme helps prevent crime in West Cumbrian Churches

Two girls and a boy are recovering after falling into water when playing on ice in Bury.

Shortly before 2.50pm on Friday 2 January 2008, police were called to Elton Sailing Club in Bury following reports a teenage girl had fallen into the water.

Officers attended and discovered two girls and a boy, all 13, had fallen into the water but had since got out safely.

No one was seriously injured in the incident. The children have been treated for shock and cold

‏Safety advice - Playing on or near frozen waters

Gwent Police is issuing a safety warning after reports have been received about adults and children putting themselves in serious danger by "playing" on and near frozen lakes/ponds.

As a result of the recent drop in temperature a number of people have been seen in the Tredegar, Ebbw Vale and Blackwood areas attempting to stand and skate on frozen lakes as well as attempting to break the ice.

Northern Constabulary & Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service would like to issue a seasonal reminder to everyone (but particularly children) of the dangers of playing on or near areas of frozen water.

Large areas of ice can look deceptively thick and stable, however there is no way in which it's strength can be gauged. If the ice cracks, even shallow areas of water are extremely dangerous.

Hampshire Constabulary is warning people that celebrating and upsetting others could cost them £80 or more on New Years Eve.

Police in Herefordshire are warning local pub landlords and bar staff to be on the alert for an unusual, and perhaps obvious, phone scam involving requests for loans.

The alert began when the licensee of the Litten Tree, Commercial Road, Hereford received a phone call around 1.30pm today (18th December 2008) from a man with a Scottish accent who gave his name as ‘Ian'.

He made out he knew the landlord and would be in later to spend a large amount of money in the bar.
